Wrestling Team Secures Fourth-Place Finish at Prestigious NCAA Region 2 Championships

The wrestling team wrapped up its competitive season with a strong showing at the NCAA Region 2 Championships, ultimately finishing in fourth place. The tournament, which brought together top wrestling programs from across the region, provided a valuable opportunity for the team to test its skills against the best of the best.
Throughout the two-day competition, the wrestling team demonstrated its depth and resilience, with several athletes turning in standout performances. A total of seven team members advanced to the quarterfinals or further, highlighting the program’s strength and versatility.
Leading the charge for the team was junior captain, Alex Hernandez, who secured a third-place finish in the 157-pound weight class. Hernandez’s impressive run included a thrilling comeback victory in the consolation semifinals, where he trailed by four points with just 30 seconds remaining before rallying to win in sudden victory.
Other top performers for the team included sophomore 165-pounder, Jake Smith, who placed fifth, and freshman 184-pounder, Michael Davis, who finished sixth. Both Smith and Davis showed tremendous promise throughout the tournament, with Smith winning three of his five matches and Davis securing two victories in his first NCAA regional appearance.
“We’re extremely proud of our team’s performance at the NCAA Region 2 Championships,” said head coach, Mark Perry. “Our athletes showed a lot of heart and determination, and it was great to see them competing at such a high level.”
The fourth-place finish marked a significant improvement for the team, which had placed seventh at the tournament a year ago. The strong showing also bodes well for the program’s future, as several key contributors will return next season.
As the team looks to build on its success, the coaching staff is already turning its attention to the offseason. With a focus on recruiting and developing young talent, the program is poised to continue its upward trajectory in the years to come.
“We’re excited about the future of our program,” Perry said. “We’ve got a great core of returners coming back next season, and we’re looking forward to adding some talented newcomers to the mix.”
With its fourth-place finish at the NCAA Region 2 Championships, the wrestling team has set a high standard for itself heading into the offseason. As the program continues to grow and develop, fans can expect to see even more exciting things from this talented group of athletes in the years to come.
