BREAKING NEWS: Alabama A&M Football Star Found Dead After Mysterious On-Field Incident

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Heartbreak ripples through the Alabama sports community as Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr., 20, has been confirmed dead weeks after suffering a traumatic injury during a game.

The redshirt freshman collapsed during the Magic City Classic on October 26, 2024, following a violent helmet-to-helmet collision. He was rushed from the field and later underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve swelling and bleeding. Despite efforts by medical staff, Burnett never recovered and passed away on November 27 at UAB Hospital.

Burnett, originally from Lakewood, California, was widely known for his energy and leadership both on and off the field. His death has left teammates, coaches, and fans in shock.

“Medrick was more than a player—he was the heartbeat of our team,” said Alabama A&M Athletics Director Dr. Paul A. Bryant. “This is a devastating loss.”

Burnett’s passing adds to growing concerns over player safety, especially surrounding head injuries in football. Several other tragic incidents have occurred across Alabama this year, prompting urgent conversations about reform and preventative measures in contact sports.

An official investigation into the incident is ongoing.
