BREAKING NEWS: Alabama Increases Penalties for Shooting Into Homes, Buildings, or Vehicles
Montgomery, AL — April 30, 2025
Alabama lawmakers have passed a new law that increases penalties for firing a gun into a home, building, or vehicle — a move aimed at reducing violent gun crimes across the state.
Under the new law, anyone convicted of shooting into an occupied or unoccupied structure or vehicle will now face harsher felony charges, including longer prison sentences and steeper fines. The law allows for penalties of up to 20 years in prison, especially if people are inside the targeted area at the time.
“This legislation is about protecting innocent lives,” said State Senator Mark Stevens. “Gunfire into homes or cars isn’t just reckless — it’s life-threatening.”
The law comes in response to rising incidents involving drive-by shootings and stray bullets damaging homes and vehicles. Law enforcement officials say the tougher penalties will help deter violent behavior.
Some lawmakers and advocacy groups have expressed concerns about how the law might be applied, urging a balanced approach that also includes violence prevention and youth intervention programs.
The new penalties will go into effect later this year.
