The Dynasty Architect Steps Down: Gregg Popovich Ends Iconic 29-Year Reign with the Spurs
San Antonio, TX – May 2, 2025 — The NBA has reached the end of an era. Gregg Popovich, the longest-tenured coach in league history and architect of one of basketball’s most successful dynasties, has officially stepped down after 29 seasons as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.
At 76 years old, Popovich departs with a record that few in professional sports can match: five NBA championships, 1,422 combined regular season and playoff wins, and an unmatched legacy of leadership, innovation, and mentorship.
Popovich’s decision follows recent health concerns, including a stroke in late 2024 and another medical event earlier this year. While stepping away from coaching, he will continue serving as the franchise’s president of basketball operations.
“Basketball has given me a life beyond anything I imagined,” Popovich said in a statement. “It’s time to step aside, but I’ll remain committed to helping this team grow and thrive.”
Popovich took over the Spurs in 1996 and transformed the small-market team into a global basketball powerhouse. Under his guidance, the Spurs became the gold standard of consistency, teamwork, and unselfish play, led by Hall of Famers like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginóbili, and Tony Parker.
His departure marks a major transition for the franchise. Mitch Johnson, Popovich’s longtime assistant and interim replacement during his recent absences, has been named the new head coach.
Around the NBA, tributes poured in. Former players, coaches, and fans praised Popovich not only for his coaching brilliance but for his authenticity, wit, and commitment to social causes.
Gregg Popovich didn’t just win games—he built a culture. And though his coaching career is over, his influence on the game of basketball will never fade.
