Kelowna, BC — May 3, 2025

The hockey community is in mourning today after the sudden death of 19-year-old Eli Matthews, a rising star defenseman for the Kelowna Hawks in the Western Junior Hockey League, who collapsed during team practice and later died at Kelowna General Hospital.

The incident occurred just after 9 a.m. during a routine training session at the Kelowna Community Arena. According to team staff, Matthews had just finished a drill when he suddenly fell to the ice, unresponsive. Medical personnel on-site responded immediately, and emergency services arrived within minutes. Despite all efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Although the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, early indications point to a possible undetected cardiac condition.

Eli Matthews, originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, had quickly risen through the junior hockey ranks thanks to his fierce defensive play, quiet leadership, and unwavering work ethic. He was considered one of the most promising prospects ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft, drawing strong interest from multiple NHL organizations.

“This is a heartbreaking loss,” said Hawks General Manager Dave Renner. “Eli was an extraordinary young man — humble, hard-working, and respected by everyone who knew him. He was the heartbeat of this team.”

Matthews had not only made an impression on the ice, but also in the Kelowna community. Known for his involvement in local youth programs and his kindness off the ice, he had become a role model to many aspiring young players.

Tributes poured in throughout the day from across the hockey world. Former players, NHL stars, and junior league teammates shared stories and condolences on social media using the hashtag #27Forever.

“Eli was everything you want in a teammate and a person,” said team captain Jordan Kruger. “He made everyone around him better. He was more than a player — he was family.”

The Kelowna Hawks have announced the immediate retirement of Matthews’ jersey number 27. In honor of his memory, the team has postponed all games scheduled for the next week.

A public vigil will be held outside the Kelowna Community Arena on Sunday evening to allow fans and members of the community to pay their respects.

As the world of hockey grieves, Eli Matthews will be remembered not just for his potential as an elite player, but for the kindness, heart, and character he brought to the game every day.
