BREAKING NEWS: 49ers Star Linebacker Dre Greenlaw Killed in Devastating Car Crash
San Francisco, CA — Sunday, May 4, 2025
The San Francisco 49ers and the NFL community are reeling after the shocking death of star linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who was killed late Saturday night in a violent car crash on the Bay Bridge. He was just 26 years old.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Greenlaw was driving alone when his vehicle, a black Mercedes-AMG, lost control around 11:48 PM. The car struck a barrier and was then hit by an oncoming truck. Emergency crews arrived swiftly, but Greenlaw was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver sustained minor injuries.
Greenlaw’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the league. Known for his tenacity on the field and quiet leadership off it, he was a heart-and-soul player for the 49ers. Drafted in the fifth round out of Arkansas in 2019, Greenlaw quickly became a defensive standout, earning respect for his grit, clutch tackles, and consistency.
The 49ers issued a statement early Sunday morning:
“We are heartbroken beyond words. Dre Greenlaw was a warrior, a leader, and a beloved member of our family. His loss is felt deeply throughout the organization.”
Tributes from teammates, coaches, and fans have poured in across social media. Quarterback Brock Purdy wrote, “This one hurts deep. Dre was a brother to all of us — fierce, loyal, and full of heart.”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also issued a statement offering condolences and praising Greenlaw’s impact both on and off the field.
A candlelight vigil is being organized outside Levi’s Stadium, where fans will gather to honor the life and legacy of a player who gave everything to the game — and to the city.
Greenlaw is survived by his family, including his mother and two sisters.
