May 13, 2025 – Los Angeles, CA
The global tennis community is in shock following the devastating news that legendary tennis coach and former professional player Brad Gilbert, along with his wife and two children, were killed in a tragic car accident late Monday evening.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on Highway 101 near Santa Barbara when Gilbert’s SUV was struck head-on by a speeding vehicle that had crossed into oncoming traffic. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 9:30 p.m. and pronounced all four members of the Gilbert family dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, whose identity has not been disclosed, was also killed.
Gilbert, 63, was known not only for his achievements on the court — reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 4 — but also for his influential coaching career, guiding legends like Andre Agassi and more recently, rising star Coco Gauff.
Tributes have poured in from across the tennis world. Billie Jean King wrote on social media, “Brad was a brilliant mind in tennis and a kind soul off the court. This is a heartbreaking loss.”
The ATP and WTA have announced plans for a joint tribute during upcoming tournaments, and a moment of silence will be observed at the Italian Open.
Gilbert’s contributions to the sport — as a player, coach, commentator, and mentor — leave an indelible mark on tennis history. He is survived by extended family and countless players whose lives he shaped.
