BREAKING NEWS: WNBA Investigating Alleged Racist Abuse Toward Angel Reese During Fever-Sky Game
The WNBA has launched an investigation after Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was reportedly subjected to racist comments during Saturday’s game against the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis.
The incident took place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where fans allegedly directed slurs and hateful remarks at Reese during the highly anticipated matchup featuring her and Indiana’s rookie star Caitlin Clark. One fan, wearing a Clark jersey, was identified as being especially disruptive during a third-quarter free throw attempt by Reese.
In response, the WNBA issued a statement confirming it is reviewing the matter under its “No Space for Hate” initiative — a campaign launched this season to combat discrimination and foster safe, respectful environments for players and fans.
“The WNBA has zero tolerance for hate or discrimination of any kind,” the league said. “We are taking this matter seriously and investigating the incident thoroughly.”
The WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) also weighed in, expressing full support for Reese and calling for decisive action. “This behavior is unacceptable. No player should be subjected to racism or abuse in any arena,” the union said.
Saturday’s game, already under the spotlight due to the on-court rivalry between Reese and Clark, intensified after a flagrant foul by Clark led to a tense exchange between the two. Reese was met with boos throughout the game — a response many believe crossed the line into targeted hostility.
Both the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky organizations are cooperating with the league’s review and emphasized their commitment to inclusive values and player safety.
This is not the first time the Fever fanbase has faced scrutiny; previous players, including DiJonai Carrington and Alyssa Thomas, have alleged similar experiences in past seasons.
As the WNBA’s investigation continues, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert reaffirmed the league’s commitment to protecting its athletes.
“We are determined to provide a league where every player is respected, supported, and safe,” Engelbert said.
More details are expected as the investigation unfolds.
