NEW YORK — The New York Yankees organization has been thrust into the national spotlight for an alarming off-field issue involving former manager Joe Girardi. According to sources close to the investigation, a disturbing message was sent to Girardi late Wednesday evening, allegedly from a self-identified kidnapper, threatening the safety of individuals connected to the Yankees franchise.
Authorities are treating the message as credible, though details remain limited. The chilling communication included references to Girardi’s past tenure with the Yankees and made veiled threats regarding current team members. Law enforcement officials, including the NYPD and FBI, have launched a joint investigation.
“At this time, we are taking all necessary precautions and working closely with authorities to ensure the safety of all involved,” a Yankees spokesperson said in a brief statement released Thursday morning. “The well-being of our players, staff, and alumni remains our top priority.”
Girardi, who managed the Yankees from 2008 to 2017 and led the team to its most recent World Series title in 2009, has not made a public comment. Sources say he is cooperating fully with investigators and has increased private security measures at his home.
The Yankees played Thursday night’s game under heightened security at Yankee Stadium. Players and coaches were informed of the situation during a closed-door meeting before batting practice.
More updates will follow as the investigation unfolds.
