8D.C. Mayor Announces Commanders Will Build New Stadium in Nation’s Capital
Washington, D.C. – Mayor Muriel Bowser and Washington Commanders Managing Partner Josh Harris have unveiled a landmark agreement to construct a state-of-the-art, 65,000-seat stadium at the historic RFK Stadium site. This ambitious project, slated to open in 2030, aims to revitalize the Anacostia Riverfront and restore the Commanders to their D.C. roots after nearly three decades.
A $3.6 Billion Vision
The total cost of the development is projected at $3.6 billion. The Commanders will contribute $2.7 billion—the largest private investment in D.C. history—to fund the stadium’s construction. The District will invest approximately $1.1 billion over the next eight years, covering infrastructure improvements, housing, green spaces, and a new sportsplex.
Transforming the RFK Campus
The new stadium will occupy just 11% of the 180-acre RFK campus, leaving ample space for mixed-use development. Plans include:
Approximately 5,000–6,000 new housing units, with at least 30% designated as affordable.
A year-round sportsplex for youth and community events.
Retail, restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues.
Extensive park and recreational areas.
The project is expected to generate over $4 billion in annual tax revenue and create approximately 14,000 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent positions.

Mayor Bowser emphasized that the development would not only bring the Commanders back to D.C. but also stimulate economic growth and job creation in Ward 7. Next Steps
The D.C. Council is set to review and vote on the proposal in the coming months. If approved, demolition of the existing RFK Stadium is expected to begin in 2026, with construction of the new stadium to follow. The Commanders are scheduled to return to D.C. for the 2030 NFL season.
