Colorado Declares May 24 as “John Elway Day” to Honour Broncos Legend
In a heartfelt tribute to one of the most iconic figures in American football, the state of Colorado officially proclaimed May 24, 2017, as “John Elway Day” . This honour recognises Elway’s monumental contributions to the Denver Broncos and his enduring impact on the community.
The announcement was made during the Mizel Institute’s annual dinner, where Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock surprised Elway with the proclamation. The event also celebrated Elway’s philanthropic efforts, particularly his support for the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club.
“He’s inspired not only my generation but the generation after me and the generation that’s coming up now,” Governor Hickenlooper remarked during the ceremony. “And one organisation that has had a lasting impact on is the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club.”
Mayor Hancock added to the accolades by presenting Elway with one of Denver’s gold challenge coins, symbolising the city’s appreciation for his contributions. “There are very few people… who have left as indelible a mark on our state, our city — heck, our nation — as you have,” Hancock stated.
John Elway’s legacy with the Denver Broncos is unparalleled. As a quarterback, he led the team to five Super Bowl appearances, securing two world championships. His tenure as an executive was equally impressive, culminating in a third Super Bowl victory for the franchise. Beyond the field, Elway has been a steadfast supporter of various charitable initiatives, solidifying his status as a community leader.
The establishment of “John Elway Day” serves as a testament to his enduring influence both on and off the gridiron. It ensures that his contributions to Colorado’s sports heritage and community development will be remembered and celebrated for generations to com
