Carter Starocci Makes NCAA History with Fifth National Wrestling Title
In a historic achievement, Penn State’s Carter Starocci has become the first wrestler in NCAA Division I history to win five national titles. Starocci clinched his fifth championship on March 22, 2025, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, defeating Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen 4-3 in the 184-pound final. This victory solidified his place among collegiate wrestling’s all-time greats.
Starocci’s unprecedented feat was made possible by an extra year of eligibility granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He previously secured four national titles at 174 pounds before moving up to 184 pounds for his final season. Throughout his collegiate career, Starocci amassed an impressive 104-4 record and was instrumental in leading the Nittany Lions to multiple team championships.
In recognition of his outstanding performance, Starocci was named the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championship Outstanding Wrestler. Despite this accolade, he narrowly missed out on the prestigious Dan Hodge Trophy, which was awarded to Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Hendrickson. Hendrickson’s victory over Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson in the heavyweight final contributed to his selection for the award.
Following his historic NCAA career, Starocci has been spotted training at American Top Team (ATT) in Coconut Creek, Florida, alongside notable fighters such as Bellator champion Johnny Eblen and fellow Penn State alumnus Bo Nickal. This move has fueled speculation about a potential transition to mixed martial arts (MMA) for the wrestling standout.
Starocci’s achievements have not only etched his name in the annals of collegiate wrestling but have also inspired a new generation of athletes. His dedication, resilience, and pursuit of excellence continue to resonate within the wrestling community and beyond.
