Commanders Acquire 4-Time Pro Bowl Cornerback Marshon Lattimore in Trade with Saints
In a bold move to bolster their defense, the Washington Commanders have acquired four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints. The trade, finalized just ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, sees Washington sending third-, fourth-, and sixth-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft to New Orleans, while receiving Lattimore and a 2025 fifth-round pick in return .
Lattimore, 28, was drafted by the Saints in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and has since established himself as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks. Over his eight-year career, he has accumulated 405 tackles, 15 interceptions, and 88 pass breakups. Despite battling injuries in recent seasons, Lattimore has remained a key figure in New Orleans’ secondary, earning Pro Bowl honors in four consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2020 .
Washington’s defense has faced challenges this season, particularly in the secondary. The addition of Lattimore is expected to provide a significant upgrade, allowing defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. more flexibility in his schemes. With Lattimore’s ability to lock down top receivers, the Commanders can now employ more aggressive defensive strategies, including increased blitzing and man-to-man coverage, reminiscent of the tactics used by head coach Dan Quinn during his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys .
The Commanders, currently leading the NFC East with a 7-2 record, are positioning themselves as serious contenders for a deep playoff run. General Manager Adam Peters expressed confidence in the trade, stating, “If we had a chance to elevate who we are and how we go about doing our business, we’re going to do that” .
While Lattimore’s integration into the team may be gradual due to his recent hamstring injury, his presence is anticipated to have an immediate impact on Washington’s defensive performance. As the Commanders prepare for the remainder of the season, the addition of a seasoned and accomplished cornerback like Lattimore could prove to be a pivotal factor in their pursuit of a championship.
