Shaun Edwards Confirms Turning Down Wigan Warriors Head Coach Role

Shaun Edwards has officially announced that he will not be taking up the head coach position at Wigan Warriors, a role he had agreed to in August 2018. The decision comes after careful consideration, with Edwards citing insufficient preparation time as the primary reason for his withdrawal.

Edwards explained that the advancement of the Rugby World Cup preparations by a month has disrupted his plans to spend eight weeks in Australia focusing on rugby league. He stated, “I feel Wigan need a more experienced rugby league head coach than myself, to give the club and the people of Wigan the best team possible.”

Despite the initial agreement, it was revealed that Edwards had not signed a formal contract with Wigan, only a verbal agreement. This allowed him the flexibility to reconsider his commitment. Edwards’ last involvement in rugby league was with London Broncos in 2000, and he acknowledged that his limited recent experience in the sport contributed to his decision.

Wigan Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan expressed understanding and respect for Edwards’ decision, stating, “He clearly feels that he is not the best man to take the team forward currently and I have to respect and accept this.” The club now faces the task of determining their coaching structure for the upcoming season.

Edwards’ decision has also led to discussions about his future with the Wales national rugby team. Reports suggest that he may remain with Wales as part of the coaching staff under new head coach Wayne Pivac.

This development marks a significant turn in Edwards’ career, reflecting his commitment to ensuring he is fully prepared and capable before taking on a head coaching role in rugby league.
