🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Fire Breaks Out in Midtown Hotel — Manager of New York Comets Missing After Tragic Incident
June 11, 2025 – New York City
A massive fire engulfed the top floors of the Midtown Grand Hotel early Wednesday morning, leaving at least five injured and several still unaccounted for—including James “Skip” Delaney, the manager of the New York Comets, the city’s beloved professional baseball team.
The blaze, which broke out shortly after 2:00 a.m., quickly spread through the 20th and 21st floors—where multiple Comets staff members were reportedly staying following their home-game win at Empire Field.
FDNY officials are calling the fire one of the most dangerous in recent years due to high winds and flammable construction materials used during recent renovations. As of noon, the fire was contained, but search-and-rescue efforts continue.
❝We fear the worst, but we’re hoping for a miracle,❞
said team owner Gloria Vega during an emotional press briefing outside team headquarters.
Delaney, 57, is a decorated former catcher and a two-time Manager of the Year. His leadership helped transform the Comets from cellar-dwellers to playoff contenders over the past three seasons.
Plane Confusion Sparks Panic
Initial reports mistakenly claimed that Delaney had boarded a private flight to Boston just before the fire. However, flight records later confirmed that he had changed plans and checked into the Midtown Grand late Tuesday.
As conflicting accounts swirl, fans have begun gathering outside Empire Field with candles, posters, and Comets jerseys—holding vigil for their missing manager and others affected by the tragedy.
