January 17 drownings: Three European tourists—a Polish couple, Marcin Checinski (47) and Sylwia Aleksandra (52), and Portuguese national Nelzon Nunes Ribeiro (67)—were swept out to sea by powerful currents on this same stretch of beach. A Russian tourist was hospitalized, and authorities managed to recover just one body .

Sudiksha Konanki’s disappearance: The University of Pittsburgh junior vanished after a night out; surveillance footage captured her at around 4 a.m. walking into the ocean with Joshua Riibe, a 22‑year‑old student from St. Cloud State. Riibe reported he attempted a rescue after a strong wave but passed out on the beach, later waking to find her gone .

Investigation underway: A massive search involving more than 300 personnel—including the FBI, U.S. Homeland Security, Indian and Dominican authorities—is ongoing. Konanki’s family has urged officials to declare her dead to begin the grieving process, though no definitive conclusion has been reached yet .
