In a heartbreaking turn of events, the sports world is reeling from the devastating news that the Arizona Diamondbacks’ team plane has crashed, claiming the lives of players, coaches, and team personnel. The flight was en route from San Francisco to Phoenix late Monday night following a three-game series against the Giants.

Preliminary reports from the FAA and NTSB confirm that the Diamondbacks’ charter flight—AZD Flight 302—lost contact with air traffic control shortly after 11:45 PM near the Sierra Nevada range. Wreckage was discovered early Tuesday morning in a remote mountainous area near Bishop, California.

There were 38 individuals aboard the aircraft. At this time, no survivors have been reported.

Among those lost were:

Ketel Marte, veteran infielder and team leader

Zac Gallen, All-Star pitcher

Corbin Carroll, breakout outfielder and 2023 Rookie of the Year

Torey Lovullo, longtime manager and beloved figure within the organization

Several coaching staff, trainers, and crew members

The team had just wrapped a road trip and was returning to Phoenix ahead of their upcoming homestand.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement early this morning:

> “We are utterly devastated by the loss of the Arizona Diamondbacks team members and staff. Our thoughts are with their families, loved ones, and the entire Diamondbacks community during this unspeakable tragedy. The entire baseball family grieves with Arizona today.”

Grief-stricken fans have begun gathering outside Chase Field, laying flowers, candles, and team memorabilia. A public memorial is being planned, with city officials and team ownership expected to address the public later today.

The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a full investigative team to the crash site. Weather and mechanical failure are both being considered as possible contributing factors.

All Major League Baseball games scheduled for today and tomorrow have been postponed in honor of those lost.
