Penrith Panthers co-captain Nathan Cleary has been hit with a $5,000 fine and suspended for six matches following a heated on-field altercation during a live NRL game over the weekend.
The star halfback exchanged blows with an opposing player late in the second half of Penrith’s clash, sparking a brief melee that halted play. Match officials quickly intervened, but the incident was referred to the NRL Judiciary for further review.
On Tuesday, the NRL confirmed the punishment, citing Cleary’s conduct as “contrary to the spirit of the game.” The six-match suspension is one of the harshest penalties handed down this season and will significantly impact the Panthers’ campaign.
Cleary, a key figure in Penrith’s recent dominance, expressed regret over the incident. “I let my emotions get the better of me, and I take full responsibility. It’s not the example I want to set,” he said in a brief statement.
The Panthers are yet to comment on whether they will appeal the decision, but insiders suggest the club may accept the ruling to avoid further disruption.
Cleary’s absence will test the depth of Penrith’s squad as they navigate a critical stretch of the season.
