BREAKING NEWS: Heat’s Pat Riley Approves $105 Million Blockbuster Trade for Former Top-3 Pick

May 15, 2025 – Miami, FL – In a headline-grabbing move that has the NBA world buzzing, Miami Heat president Pat Riley has officially approved a massive $105 million trade to acquire a former top-3 overall draft pick, signaling the franchise’s renewed push for championship contention.

According to league sources, the Heat are finalizing a deal to acquire forward/center Deandre Ayton from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Tyler Herro, Nikola Jović, a future first-round pick, and salary fillers to match Ayton’s hefty contract. The deal, which totals approximately $105 million in player salaries and future considerations, is expected to be completed pending league approval and physicals.

Ayton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, brings size, rebounding, and scoring ability to a Miami frontcourt that has lacked a dominant interior presence. Despite a somewhat inconsistent tenure in Phoenix and a brief stint with Portland, the 26-year-old big man is still viewed around the league as a high-upside talent capable of thriving in the right system.

“Pat Riley doesn’t make moves unless he sees a clear path to winning,” said ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. “This trade is all about adding another core piece next to Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, and Ayton could be the missing link Miami’s been searching for.”

A Risky But Bold Move

The Heat have been relatively quiet since their 2023 Finals run, but with Butler turning 36 this year, the window to chase another title is closing. Riley, known for his aggressive roster-building approach, seems determined not to waste it.

However, the deal isn’t without risk. Ayton’s reputation has been marked by questions about his motor and consistency, especially in high-pressure playoff moments. Critics point to his underwhelming performances in Phoenix’s later postseason runs as a reason for concern.

Still, Miami believes in its player development system and culture, which has revitalized the careers of several players in the past. “Ayton won’t be able to coast in Miami,” said one league executive. “The Heat hold their stars accountable.”

Tyler Herro Era Ends in Miami

The trade also marks the end of the Tyler Herro era in South Beach. Drafted in 2019, Herro emerged as a dynamic scorer and fan favorite but struggled with injuries and fit in recent seasons. His departure, while emotionally difficult for some fans, clears the way for a new chapter.

“I’ll always be grateful for my time in Miami,” Herro posted on X (formerly Twitter) following the news. “It’s been a blessing to play in front of Heat Nation.”

What’s Next for the Heat?

Assuming the trade is finalized, the Heat could roll out a starting lineup featuring Butler, Adebayo, Ayton, and key rotation players like Terry Rozier and Jaime Jaquez Jr. With Erik Spoelstra on the sidelines and a renewed sense of urgency, Miami looks poised to make a serious push in the East.

The NBA landscape just shifted—and once again, it’s Pat Riley pulling the strings.
