BREAKING: James Blanchard, Texas Tech Football General Manager, Passes Away
James Blanchard, the General Manager of the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team, has tragically passed away. The news was confirmed by Texas Tech Athletics on Friday, May 16, 2025. Blanchard had been a pivotal figure in the program’s rise to prominence, known for his innovative approach to college football personnel management.
Blanchard joined Texas Tech in 2021 alongside head coach Joey McGuire, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his time at Baylor and a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers. In 2023, he was promoted to General Manager, overseeing all aspects of the Red Raiders’ recruiting operations. Under his leadership, Texas Tech secured consecutive top-25 recruiting classes and assembled one of the nation’s top transfer portal classes, solidifying the program’s competitive edge in the Big 12 Conference.
In February 2025, Blanchard signed a new three-year contract with Texas Tech, reportedly worth $1.575 million, making him one of the highest-paid general managers in college football. This decision came after he turned down an offer from Notre Dame, choosing instead to remain in Lubbock and continue his work with the Red Raiders.
Blanchard’s passing leaves a significant void in the Texas Tech football program. Head coach Joey McGuire expressed deep sorrow, stating, “James was not just a colleague but a close friend. His impact on this program and the lives of those he worked with is immeasurable. We will honor his legacy by continuing the work he was so passionate about.”
The Texas Tech community, along with college football fans nationwide, mourns the loss of a visionary leader whose contributions will be remembered for years to come.
