Former Jacksonville Jaguars Coach Dick Jauron Passes Away at 74

Dick Jauron, the first-ever defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 74. He was diagnosed with cancer and died in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Jauron had a long and respected career in the NFL, beginning as a standout safety at Yale before playing professionally for the Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and made a significant impact in various roles across the league.

 

Jauron is best remembered for helping shape the Jaguars’ defense during their inaugural 1995 season and for his successful tenure as head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he earned NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2001. He also held coaching positions with the Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, and Cleveland Browns. Widely respected for his football knowledge and leadership, Jauron left a lasting legacy in the sport. He is survived by his wife, Gail, and their two daughters, Kacy and Amy.
