BREAKING NEWS: Tragedy in Training – Rookie Linebacker Collapses, Dies During Practice

May 21, 2025 – Cincinnati, OH

The Cincinnati Bengals organization is reeling after a devastating tragedy struck during this morning’s OTA (Organized Team Activity) session at the team’s training facility.

Rookie linebacker Darius Cole, just 22 years old and a fourth-round pick out of Georgia Tech, collapsed unexpectedly on the practice field shortly after completing a routine conditioning drill. Medical staff rushed to administer aid, including CPR and defibrillation, before Cole was transported via ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Despite intensive efforts, Cole was pronounced dead just before noon.

“This is the darkest day I’ve ever experienced as a coach,” said Bengals Head Coach Zac Taylor at a tearful press conference. “Darius was not just a promising athlete, but a remarkable young man who had already made a lasting impact in our locker room.”

Team physicians suspect a previously undiagnosed cardiac condition may have contributed to the incident. An autopsy is expected to confirm the exact cause of death in the coming days.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement expressing the league’s condolences, calling Cole’s passing “a heartbreaking reminder of the risks athletes take in pursuit of their dreams.”

Cole had quickly become a fan favorite following the draft, known for his work ethic, humility, and powerful story—having overcome childhood homelessness to earn a college scholarship and graduate with honors.

The Bengals have canceled all team activities for the week. Grief counselors have been made available to players and staff.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Friday evening outside Paycor Stadium.
