Pair of Florida Gators named to 2025 Bednarik Award preseason watch list…

The Florida Gators’ defensive line is getting some well-deserved preseason recognition, as a pair of senior standouts, defensive tackle Caleb Banks and edge rusher Tyreak Sapp, have been named to the 2025 Chuck Bednarik Award preseason watch list. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.

Banks and Sapp are among a select group of players from across the country to be considered for the prestigious honor. Their inclusion on the list is a testament to their strong performances during the previous season, where both were key contributors to the Gators’ defense.

In 2024, Banks made a significant impact, recording 21 tackles (10 solo), seven tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. He also forced two fumbles and was a disruptive presence in the backfield. Sapp had a breakout year, leading the team with seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss. He also earned a high Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade, ranking him among the top edge rushers in the nation.

Both players had the option to enter the NFL Draft but chose to return for their final season, a decision that has now paid off with this preseason recognition. Their experience and leadership will be vital for the Gators’ defense as they head into the 2025 season.

The Bednarik Award watch list will be narrowed down to a group of semifinalists in November, and the winner will be announced in December as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
