Pete Alonso Becomes Mets’ All-Time Home Run King in Historic 13-5 Victory

NEW YORK – In a night of record-breaking power, Pete Alonso blasted his way into the history books, becoming the New York Mets’ all-time home run leader as the team erupted for six total home runs in a commanding 13-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.

Alonso’s historic moment came in the bottom of the third inning when he launched a two-run shot off Braves starter Spencer Strider. The blast, his 253rd career home run, officially surpassed Darryl Strawberry’s 37-year-old franchise record. The Citi Field crowd erupted in a thunderous ovation, and the Mets first baseman was greeted with a celebratory reception from his teammates and a standing ovation from the fans, acknowledging the new home run king.

Not content with just one record-breaking swing, Alonso added to his tally in the sixth inning with a solo shot, extending his new record to 254 career home runs. He finished the night with two homers and three RBIs, helping to snap the Mets’ seven-game losing streak.

Alonso wasn’t the only Met with a multi-homer night. Catcher Francisco Alvarez also went deep twice, hitting a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the sixth. The Mets’ home run barrage also included a tie-breaking three-run blast from Brandon Nimmo in the fourth inning and a solo shot from Brett Baty in the sixth, which came on the heels of Alvarez’s second long ball.

The six total home runs tied a franchise record for a single game in the expansion era, and remarkably, all six of them were hit with two outs.

While the Mets’ offense stole the show, the pitching staff also held their own. Despite starter Clay Holmes allowing five runs over 3 2/3 innings, the bullpen, led by a four-inning, hitless performance from Justin Hagenman who earned his first career save, shut down the Braves offense for the remainder of the game.

The Mets’ powerful performance and historic night for Alonso provided a much-needed victory, as they now look to build on this momentum and climb in the NL East standings.
