Ohio State can add punter to the list of things it has to find this offseason after following Jesse Mirco’s decision to enter the transfer portal.

Mirco joined the program in 2021, coming from the Prokick Australia league, the same league where the Buckeyes once found Cameron Johnston. The success of Johnston as part of a 2014 national championship team helped pave the way for Mirco to eventually join the program.

In his three years in Columbus, Mirco attempted 130 punts averaging 43.9 yards per attempt, with a long of 77 coming against Northwestern in 2022. His most memorable moment, however, came when he elected to run for 22 yards on a fourth-down attempt not intended to be a fake punt against Rutgers in 2022. The decision led to an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Scarlet Knights that riled up both sidelines, leading to a shouting match between Ryan Day and Greg Schiano.

Mirco was part of a special teams unit that overall has been a topic of concern for the Buckeye dating back to last season. Now his departure puts OSU in the market for a new punter.

Overall, this is the 15th scholarship player Ohio State has lost to the transfer portal and second specialist, joining kicker Parker Lewis.
